William Diamant's SAUVAGE (Fr) (Sri Pekan) utilized a ground-saving rail ride

to captured Sunday's $150,000

Sheepshead Bay H. (G2) at Belmont Park by a

half-length. With jockey Javier Castellano in the irons, the Tom Albertrani

trainee was never far from the pace set by Finery (Lear Fan) and stopped the

clock for 1 3/8 miles on the firm turf in 2:15 3/5. Sent off the 16-1 sixth

choice in the eight-horse field, Sauvage returned $34.20, $11.60 and $7.80 to

her supporters.

Angara (GB) (Alzao) made a game late run from the back of the pack to take

second by a neck over Barancella (Fr) (Acatenango), paying $5.20 and $3.20 while

ending the $186 exacta. The latter filly was worth $3.60 and completed the $884

trifecta while Finery, another half-length back in fourth, rounded out the

1-3-4-6 superfecta that gave back $4,272. Honey Ryder (Lasting Approval), the

2-1 favorite, came in fifth and was followed by Dreams Come True (Fr) (Zafonic),

Kate Winslet (Signal Tap) and Minge Cove (Sandpit [Brz]).

Sauvage earned her first stakes win stateside, though she did take last

year's La Coupe de Pouliches in France. The four-year-old miss, who's record now

reads 14-5-0-0, $162,260, was bred by Paul Nataf, Patrick Chedeville & Enrico

Ciampi in France. She is out of the winning Sans Prix (Caerleon), who is also

the dam of Group 3 winner Eyeq (Cadeaux Genereux).

Albertrani said the bay filly could go next in the New York H. (G2) over

Belmont's turf on July 2.
