Silver Max looks to sparkle in River City
|
Grade 1 winner Silver Max heads a field of 11 turf horses entered in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 H. at Churchill Downs. A two-time graded stakes winner over the Matt Winn turf, including the Firecracker in late June, the five-year-old horse figures to appreciate the class relief following a pair of unplaced efforts in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland and Fourstardave H. at Saratoga. Trained by Dale Romans, Silver Max led wire to wire when posting a 1 1/2-length decision in the Firecracker and figures to be showing the way once again with regular rider Robby Albarado in the 1 1/8-mile River City. The son of Badge of Silver will attempt to push his bankroll past the $2-million mark with a victory, earning $1,953,598 so far from a 26-12-5-1 career record. Silver Max ranks first by BRIS Prime Power (158) and Current Class (119.5). Romans is also responsible for the uncoupled Guys Reward, the 2012 Firecracker hero who has pocketed a pair of Grade 3 victories this season in the Oceanport at Monmouth Park and Tampa Bay S. The seven-year-old horse is also a five-time on Churchill Downs' turf. Last seen finishing fifth in the lucrative More Than Ready at Kentucky Downs, the son of Grand Reward will be piloted by Corey Lanerie.

Greengrassofyoming exits his first stakes tally, posting a 1 1/4-length
decision in the September 28 Remington Green at Saturday's nine-furlong trip,
and trainer Michael Tomlinson is optimistic that the four-year-old gelding can
carry his form forward with jockey Brian Hernandez Jr.
"The longer the better for him," Tomlinson said. "I liked the way he came out
of his last race and this one looked like a logical next step.
"He ran a great race last time out, but obviously there was no Silver Max
down there. We're hoping maybe Silver Max isn't in top form and we can go catch
him Saturday."
Charles LoPresti, who is best known for handling two-time reigning Horse of
the Year Wise Dan, has a pair of uncoupled entrants in Set the Sail and
Villandry.
Set the Sail earned his lone win of 2014 via disqualification two starts
back, a deep allowance/optional claiming event at Saratoga, and the
five-year-old gelding finished second in last year's River City at long odds.
Shaun Bridgmohan has the assignment. Villandry brings stronger form lines into
the race, placing in the Opening Verse at Saratoga this summer and the Grade 3
Sycamore at Keeneland most recently. Julien Leparoux will retake the mount.
Other contenders include the Graham Motion-trained Under Control, who has
been competitive in his last three stakes attempts at Laurel Park and Monmouth
Park; and stakes hero Gentleman's Kitten, who exits a runner-up in the Remington
Green and is campaigned by leading owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey.
