Sophomores vie in Cab Calloway

Last updated: 7/31/06 4:19 PM

A competitive field of eight will vie in Wednesday's $150,000 Cab Calloway

Division of the New York Stallion S. at Saratoga. The race for state-bred

three-year-olds is named for the legendary jazz artist and bandleader Cab

Calloway, who is best known for the song "Minnie The Moocher." In the early

1930s, the Cab Calloway Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra were the

co-house bands at the Cotton Club in New York. Calloway continued to perform

right up until his death in 1994 at the age of 88.

RUNNING DOG (A. P Jet), runner-up in the Spectacular Bid Division of the New

York Stallion S. on June 4 at Belmont Park, and METRO METEOR (City Zip), who has

won his last two starts on the turf sprinting, could vie for favoritism in the

nine-furlong Cab Calloway, which is scheduled to be decided on the inner turf

course.

Other contenders include New York Breeders' Futurity winner CLASSIC PACK

(Regal Classic) and the speedy OEDIPUS O'NEAL (Freud).

The field, with riders, weights and morning-line odds, consists of SPEAKING

OUT (Precise End), Kent Desormeaux, 115, 12-1; Metro Meteor, Cornelio Velasquez,

121, 3-1; FAIRWAY DRIVE (Western Expression), John Velazquez, 115, 10-1; Oedipus
