Spirit One aims for Goodwood, Breeders' Cup Classic

Last updated: 9/16/08 4:51 PM

SPIRIT ONE (Fr) (Anabaa Blue), 13-1 upset winner of the Arlington Million

(G1) on August 9, will make his next start in the Goodwood S. (G1) at Santa

Anita's Oak Tree meeting on September 27. His connections are eyeing the October

25 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), according to a report in the Racing Post.

"We decided not to go for the (September 27) Jockey Club (Gold Cup [G1] at

Belmont) as we will come up against Curlin (Smart Strike)," trainer Philippe

Demercastel told the Post. "And I don't want to run him over a mile and a

half in the Turf Classic ([G1] at Belmont), so we have decided to go to Santa

Anita."

Winner of the Prix Exbury (Fr-G3)  in March and a close fourth to Duke

of Marmalade (Danehill) in the Prix Ganay (Fr-G1) in April, Spirit One was

runner-up in the La Coupe (Fr-G3) on June 14 at Longchamp before wiring his

rivals in the Arlington Million. His only other pattern victory occurred in the

2006 Prix des Chenes (Fr-G3).

The Goodwood will mark Spirit One's debut on a Pro-Ride surface.
