Stevie Wonderboy represented by first winner

Champion STEVIE WONDERBOY (Stephen Got Even) was represented by his first

winner as a sire Wednesday evening when Sunny Superstition captured the 8TH race

at Del Mar. With Christian Santiago-Reyes aboard, the Doug O'Neill pupil ran

toward the rear in the early going of the 5 1/2-furlong maiden claiming test

before picking it up and going on to score by 1 1/2 lengths on the wire. The bay

juvenile was making his third career start in this spot, having previously run

third and a dead-heat fourth at Hollywood Park. The Kentucky-bred completed his

first victory in 1:05 over the Polytrack for owners Martin Gardner, Allan

Grossbard and Mike Vile.

Stevie Wonderboy never finished off-the-board during his six-race career,

which opened with a runner-up effort against maiden rivals. Also trained by

O'Neill, he faced stakes company next out and responded with

a third-place run in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. (G3). The chestnut showed up

against maidens again, this time scoring by four lengths, and continued his

winning ways with a five-length romp in the Del Mar Futurity (G2) in his next

two starts.

The Kentucky-bred, who was campaigned by entertainer Merv Griffin, made his

final start of 2005 when lining up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Belmont

Park and solidified his status as the top two-year-old male with a 1 1/4-length

victory. An Eclipse Award as champion juvenile male followed just a couple of

weeks after Stevie Wonderboy launched his Triple Crown bid with a runner-up

effort in the San Rafael S. (G2).

That would be his last race on the track, though, as the colt suffered a

condylar fracture of his right front leg during a workout at Santa Anita in

February 2006. He headed to the breeding shed having accumulated $1,058,940 in

career earnings to go along with his 6-3-2-1 mark.

In-bred 3X3 to Broodmare of the Year and dual Grade 3 winner Weekend Surprise

(Secretariat), Stevie Wonderboy is out of the Summer Squall mare Heat Lightning,

who has also produced Group 3 victress Theyskens' Theory (Bernardini). His dam

is herself a daughter of Grade 3 winner Mystical Mood (Robert), who placed in

the 1981 Frizette S. (G1) and Matron S. (G1).

Mystical Mood would go on in the breeding shed to foal Grade/Group 2-winning

sire Fair Judgment (Alleged) as well as the granddam of dual Grade 3 heroine

Ailalea (Pulpit) and Grade 1-placed stakes vixen Spritely (Touch Gold). Farther

back in this female family one can find Group 1-winning sire Istidaad (Chief's

Crown).
