Stonestreet snaps up Medaglia

d'Oro filly for $650,000 at Midlantic

Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables, the majority owner of Horse of the Year

Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), went to $650,000 to secure another filly by

Medaglia d'Oro at Monday's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale

at Timonium, Maryland. Consigned by Eisaman Equine, agent for the Estate of

Edmund Gann, Hip No. 69 thereby became the second-most expensive horse in the

Midlantic sale's history.

Last year, the colt subsequently named Trappe Shot (Tapit) sold for a

Midlantic record of $850,000. Hence Monday's top seller ranks as the sale's

priciest-ever filly.

The bay juvenile had drilled one furlong in a bullet :10 1/5 last Wednesday,

tying for the fastest time at the distance during the two-day under tack show.

The Kentucky-bred is the first registered foal from the stakes-winning Chit

Chat Pam (Valid Expectations), who earned $98,620 from a 5-2-0-1 line. This is

the family of the precocious juvenile filly Strategic Maneuver

(Cryptoclearance), heroine of the 1993 Spinaway S. (G1), Matron S. (G1),

Schuylerville S. (G2) and Demoiselle S. (G2). Strategic Maneuver went on to

produce Grade 2 victress Cat Fighter (Storm Cat) and Irish Group 3-winning sire

Ishiguru (Danzig).

The session topper's fifth dam is the influential Cold Reply (Northern

Dancer), whose descendants include Irish Group 2 hero Van Nistelrooy (Storm

Cat), Grade 2 scorer Halory Hunter (Jade Hunter) and Japanese classic winner

Genuine (Sunday Silence).

Tapit again made his presence felt at the auction, with his juvenile DOC

FARONE selling for $450,000 to lead all colts on Monday. Steven W. Young, agent,

purchased the gray, who sported Hip 282.

The Kentucky-bred had worked a quarter-mile in :22 1/5 at Thursday's under

tack show for consigner Eddie Woods, agent for Graves and Lynch.

Out of the winning Cherokee Run mare Prall Street, the colt hails from the

family of multiple Grade 2 queen Rigamajig (Majestic Light) and multiple Grade 1

winner True Knight (Chateaugay), successful in the 1974 Suburban H. (G1) and

Amory L. Haskell H. (G1).

BUFFGIRL, a daughter of Quiet American, attracted a winning bid of $380,000

from Hillwood Stable. Cataloged as Hip 185 and offered by Pike Racing, agent,

she had zipped three furlongs in a bullet :34 3/5 at Wednesday's under tack

show.

The Kentucky-bred bay is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Sparklin Lil

(Mr. Sparkles), the dam of world record-setting sprinter Twin Sparks (Twining).

Last November, Twin Sparks scorched six furlongs in 1:06.49, a world record on

dirt, while capturing the Caballos del Sol H. at Turf Paradise. He added a

victory in the Swift S. to his resume earlier this season.

Buffgirl is also a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Sizzlin South (A

Corking Limerick) as well as the stakes-placed pair of Garrettslilnora (Bishop's

Choice) and Icyman (Mertzon). They are all out of the winning Icelandic Dancer

(Eskimo), who comes from the family of 1985 Vosburgh S. (G1) hero Another Reef

(Plum Bold).

A pinhooking success, Buffgirl was a bargain $30,000 yearling purchase at

Fasig-Tipton Kentucky last July.

Previously held over two days, the Midlantic sale was compressed into a

single session, with a somewhat slimmed-down catalog, this year. In the wake of

those changes, Monday's auction witnessed across-the-board increases, compared to the cumulative results posted in 2009.

Fasig-Tipton reported 273 horses sold for a total of $13,099,500, up 23

percent from the $10,651,000 raked in by 253 juveniles over two sessions last

year. The average rose 14 percent, from $42,099 to $47,984, and the median

jumped 8 percent gain, from $25,000 to $27,000.
