Summerly breezes for final start
SUMMERLY (Summer Squall), queen of last year's Kentucky Oaks (G1), breezed
four furlongs in :50 1/5 on Sunday over Churchill Downs' fast main track for new
owner WinStar Farm. The four-year-old chestnut, who was purchased for $3.3
million at the recent Fasig-Tipton November Selected Mixed Sale, is scheduled to make her final career start in Thursday's Falls
City H. (G2) at Churchill.
"We talked with (trainer) Scott (Blasi) after we bought her about how well
she was doing and how disappointed they were that they didn't get to run her in
the Breeders' Cup," WinStar Racing Manager Elliott Walden explained. "If she
wins, it'll get her over a million dollars (in career earnings), which would be
nice."
Summerly, who was excluded from running in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1)
after that event drew an overflow field, has competed only three times this
year, taking the Ashado S. before running fifth in the Ruffian H. (G1) and
seventh in the Spinster S. (G1). Walden added that plans call for Summerly to be
bred to Distorted Humor next year.
"Her physical appearance was a factor," Walden said about WinStar purchasing
the filly. "She's an outstanding looking filly, and we just think she'll have
good babies. The combination of her physical appearance with her race record
makes her a very special, special animal."
Summerly enters the Falls City with a 13-6-1-2, $891,633, career mark,
including victories in last year's Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) and Silverbulletday S.
(G3) as well as placings in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and Mother
Goose S. (G1).
