Treadway Racing Stable's Sweet Reason just got up in Saturday's Grade 1,

$500,000 Test Stakes at

Saratoga to post a one-length win with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard.

The Leah Gyarmati-trained Street Sense filly provided back-to-back Grade 1

wins for female conditioners at the Spa, following Palace's score in the Alfred

G. Vanderbilt for horsewoman Linda Rice.

"I'm thrilled that she's continuing on to be a good horse in her

three-year-old year," Gyarmati said. "It's a first for me to have a nice horse

that doesn't just pop up and run one or two big races, but it seems like she's

got a nice career going and keeps improving. It's exciting."

Miss Behaviour was quickest from the gate, but soon found Fiftyshadesofgold

sliding by along the rail and settled into a stalking third as that gray filly

set splits of :22 3/5, :45 2/5 and 1:09 3/5 down the backstretch.

Fiftyshadesofgold tried to lead all the way home, but just could not hold back

Sweet Reason in the lane.

Sweet Reason found herself a bit farther back than usual after stumbling at

the start and bumping with Little Alexis to her outside. Oritz allowed his mount

to make her own way in seventh while saving ground on the inside before angling

her away from the rail entering the stretch.

The bay miss put in a determined run in the five path to catch and pass

Fiftyshadesofgold, crossing under the wire in a final time of 1:22 1/5 for seven

furlongs on the fast dirt.

"This seemed like the perfect spot for her -- she loves Saratoga, she's shown

she likes seven-eighths, her one-turn mile (in the Acorn) at Belmont was great,

she came out of that race great -- so this was the logical spot," Gyarmati

explained. "I was very excited about running her here. It came up a very salty

field with some really nice fillies in the race, so this was probably her

biggest test yet, in my opinion. She was doing really well, though, so win,

lose, or draw, I felt I'd done everything I could and she was as good as I could

get her. I went in feeling good about the race."

"She was perfect. She broke from behind, relaxed and when I asked her to go,

she just took off," Ortiz stated.

Miss Behaviour and Little Alexis just got to Fiftyshadesofgold before the

wire, so that the three were separated in that order by only two noses. It was

another half-length back to fifth-placer Sweet Whiskey, whom Fiftyshadesofgold

crowded twice down on the rail during the stretch run, and completing the order

of finish were while Thank You Marylou, Tea Time, Bird Maker, Southern Honey and

Street Story. Princess Violet and Red Velvet were both withdrawn.

"My first Grade 1 try, at Saratoga, it was just kind of a dream (come) true

day. I'm fighting back tears," pronounced Phil Schoenthal, trainer of Miss

Behaviour. "I thought she'd run big and I trained her trying to get the extra

distance. At the eighth-pole, I thought she might get home, but I'm proud of

her. She ran a great race."

"I'm very satisfied the way she did it, my filly," jockey Javier

Castellano praised Miss Behaviour. "Second-best today.

Beautiful spot. Great trip. Dream trip. That's where I wanted to be. Two horses

made the pace. I'm third, outside -- beautiful spot. That's where I wanted to be.

Turning for home I asked her; turned her on and said, 'Let's go.' She gave me

everything she had. Just second-best today. I give a lot of credit to the

winner."

Sweet Reason paid $6.20 as the 2-1 favorite while improving her career line

to read 5-1-1 from eight lifetime starts. The filly's only off-the-board run

came as a fourth in the last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, which

followed romping wins at Saratoga in her maiden debut and the Spinaway as well

as a runner-up effort in the Frizette at Belmont Park.

Sweet Reason took the rest of the year off and reappeared on March 7 at

Aqueduct to take an optional claimer over the inner dirt. Rice stretched her

charge out to nine furlongs for the Gazelle, perhaps in an attempt to gauge her

Kentucky Oaks chances, but Sweet Reason was third that day by 7 3/4 lengths. She

was given a two-month freshening and showed back up in the sprinting ranks on

the Belmont Stakes undercard at Big Sandy to post a half-length victory in the

Acorn last out on June 7.

The $300,000 winner's share from the Test gave Sweet Reason membership in the

millionaire's club, as her lifetime earnings now stand at $1,229,000. She long

ago earned back her purchase price of $185,000 as a

Keeneland September

yearling.

Bred in Kentucky by Brent & Beth Harris and

Darley, Sweet Reason

is out of the stakes-placed Mt. Livermore mare Livermore Leslie, making her a

half-sister to Grade 3 heroine Don't Forget Gil. Livermore Leslie is herself a

half-sibling to Grade 3 victor Highland Gold as well as multiple stakes-placed

Fountain Square, who is the dam of Grade 2 conqueror Timber Reserve.

Farther back this female family also boasts Horse of the Year Moccasin as

well as champions Gamely and Ridan.
