Tattersalls Foal Sale commences

Last updated: 11/24/09 5:16 PM

Tattersalls' December Foal Sale kicks off in Newmarket Wednesday with 950

lots cataloged, the smallest number at the auction since 2001. This year's Foal

Sale, which runs through Saturday, is 311 lots lighter than last year's and is

also a day shorter. The sale is graded with Wednesday's session expected to be

the quietest day. The standard of foal steps up a level Thursday with the best

lots set to appear on the final two days, particularly Friday.

Potential standouts include Lot No. 751, an Oasis Dream (GB) colt who is the

first foal of 2006 One Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) heroine Speciosa (Danehill

Dancer). Offered from Trickledown Stud, the colt is bred by Speciosa's ownership

partnership headed by her trainer Pam Sly.

Lot 867 is a Hurricane Run (Ire) half-sister to Debutante S. (Ire-G2) and

Tattersalls sales race winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer) offered

from Ballinahown Stud.

Lot 802 has already appeared at Tattersalls once this year. A Bahamian Bounty

filly, she was sold with her dam Ripples Maid (Dansili [GB]) for 132,000 guineas

to agent David Redvers at Tattersalls in July in the late Rex Mead's dispersal.

Lot 840, bred by John and Bernadette Hayden and consigned from Rosetown House

Stud, is a full-sister to July Cup (Eng-G1) heroine Fleeting Spirit (Ire)

(Invincible Spirit), winner of the Cartier Sprinter Award last week.

Montjeu (Ire) has only two lots cataloged and these include Lot 1019, a

three-quarter brother to Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Fr-G1) runner-up Mikhail

Glinka (Galileo [Ire]) and Monday's 275,000 guineas December Yearling Sale top

lot.

Among the first-crop sires with foals on offer are multiple Group 1 winners

Dylan Thomas (Ire), Manduro and Teofilo. The latter's offerings include Lot

1171, a sibling to E.P. Taylor S. (Can-G1) winner Folk Opera (Ire) (Singspiel

[Ire]) offered from Moorpark Stud.

"It may be a smaller catalog than in recent years, but it's a quality one,"

Tattersalls marketing director Jimmy George said. "All the current active top 20

sires in Britain and Ireland are represented, and the strength of our October

Yearling Sales has engendered a feeling of cautious optimism."
