A field of seven will head to the gate to contest the
seven-furlong $150,000 Tom Fool H. (G2) at Belmont Park on Sunday. SILVER TRAIN
(Old Trieste) is clearly the class of the field. Winner of the Breeders' Cup
Sprint (G1) last year, the Richard Dutrow trainee started the year off poorly,
running seventh in the Richter Scale Breeders' Cup Sprint Championship H. (G2)
as the even-money favorite and then a close second in an allowance/optional
claiming test after breaking through the gate prior to the start. The
four-year-old dark bay got back to winning form in his last appearance, holding
off the rallying Sun King (Charismatic) to score a head victory in the
Metropolitan H. (G1) over this same surface. A winner of four of six at the
Elmont, New York, track, it is hard for us to bet against him. Edgar Prado
retains the mount.
BIG APPLE DADDY (Precise End) posted a solid victory last out in the Donald Levine
Memorial H. in May at Philadelphia Park. The dark bay four-year-old garnered a
105 BRIS Speed figure in that one and captured his third win in his past four
outings, the exception being a close third in the Carter H. (G1) over sloppy going.
Seven furlongs has proven to be a suitable distance for the Bruce Levine trainee,
and Big Apple Daddy has the late kick to get him near the front. Richard Migliore will ride.
SIR GREELEY (Mr. Greeley) will attempt to better the winner of the Met Mile,
a race in which the four-year-old gelding came home sixth. The James Jerkens
trainee annexed the Westchester H. (G3) here at Belmont two back and finished a
close second in the Carter preceding that. Sir Greeley has good tactical rating
abilities and should prove a useful sort in the exotics. Eibar Coa has the call.
WAR FRONT (Danzig) prevailed in three straight last year, including
the Princelet S. by eight lengths. The bay four-year-old opened up this year with two
second-place finishes in the Mr. Prospector H. (G3) in January and the Deputy Minister H. (G3)
in early February.
In the former race, War Front earned a career-high 113 Speed figure as well as
triple-digit BRIS E2 and Late Pace ratings. Although he will probably be hard pressed to win
here, he is certainly capable of
hitting the board.
ANEW (Awesome Again) is a former claimer turned Grade 2 winner when he wired
the True North H. last out. He will be the one on the early lead, but stretches
out in distance from that last one and we will try to beat him here. Belmont
veteran VOODOO (Petionville) came home a well-beaten seventh in the True North
last out and, although he has proven himself at three-quarters of a mile, we are
going to bet against in this one. MACH SPEED (A.P. Indy) just missed the board
in the True North, finishing fourth, but might be outclassed here.
