Trinniberg looking to snap losing streak in Smile Sprint

Next entered in the seven-furlong Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby

undercard, Trinniberg dueled for the lead for a half-mile before retreating to

seventh over the sloppy track. Winless in five attempts on off tracks,

Trinniberg finished more than 12 lengths behind Delaunay, one of the nation's

premier sprinters.

Trinniberg's recent works have included two bullets over the Calder strip.

Willie Martinez again has the mount on the 123-pound high weight.

Fort Loudon and Swagger Jack, both of whom fared poorly in the Metropolitan

Handicap last time, figure to show more here. A seven-time winner at Calder,

Fort Loudon beat Trinniberg in the Carry Back on 2012 Summit of Speed Day, and

over the winter at Gulfstream beat Swagger Jack by a half-length in the

Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship.

Swagger Jack rebound from that loss to Fort Loudon by beating that rival to

the finish in the Gulfstream Park Handicap, and then posting a 15-1 upset of the

Carter Handicap at Aqueduct on April 6.

Grade 2 veteran Justin Phillip enters in near-peak form following a win in

the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap and a runner-up placing behind the well-regarded

Fast Bullet in the True North Handicap at Belmont. The Smile Sprint will mark

the first race in south Florida for the five-year-old son of First Samurai.

The June 8 Ponche Handicap, the top local prep for the Smile Sprint, has

yielded most of the other major contenders for Saturday's race. Black Diamond

Cat, Close It Out, Grande Shores, Bahamian Squall, Jackson Bend, and

Trickmeister occupied the first six slots, in that order, with multiple Grade 1

hero Jackson Bend likely in need of a race in his first outing since Labor Day

weekend last fall.

Other notables include the multiple stakes-winning Spectacular Sky, My Pal

Chrisy, and Sweet Cassiopeia.

The Grade 3, $150,000

Carry Back,

for three-year-olds at six furlongs, looks a lot like its local prep, the June 8

Unbridled. The filly R Free Roll blew the doors off her male rivals by 6 3/4

lengths in the Unbridled, and back to re-oppose are Rockyshomerun, City of

Weston and Sr. Quisqueyano, who occupied the next three slots. Mico Margarita, a

recent allowance winner at Churchill for trainer Steve Asmussen, is also in with

a chance.

The main contenders in the Grade 3, $150,000

Azalea, a

six-furlong dash for sophomore fillies, are Wildcat Lily, who took the June 8

Leave Me Alone by four lengths; Calder Oaks winner Street Girl; Grade 3-placed

Speedinthruthecity; stakes winners Guadalupe High and Vitameta; and local

allowance scorers By Golly Molly and Dreaming of Susie.

The most accomplished entrants in the $100,000

Turf Sprint at five furlongs are Regally Ready, winless in seven starts

dating back to the 2011 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and the multiple

stakes-winning filly Madame Giry. Tripski, Silver Cloud, and Determinato are

other major contenders.

Hollywood

Wildcat, a 7 1/2-furlong grass test for fillies and mares, are 2012 winner

Callmethesqueeze, and Angelica Zapata, who captured four straight stakes on

Calder's main track last season.
