Trinniberg posts work, aiming for Churchill Downs

Champion sprinter Trinniberg put in his first recorded workout since

returning from Dubai, where he finished 11th in the $2 million Dubai Golden

Shaheen, covering five furlongs in 1:02 2/5 over a fast track at Calder

Wednesday morning.

"After the race in Dubai, he was going crazy in his stall; he was feeling so

good," trainer Shivananda Parbhoo said of the colt's demeanor, which prompted an

earlier-than-expected return to the track. "And when we got him to back Calder,

he was doing so well, that we decided to take him out to gallop.

"Once he got on the track, he was all business; it's like he was telling us

that he wanted to get back to work."

With instructions to start the Wednesday work "nice and easy," Trinniberg

began his move at a steady gallop before gathering momentum with designs on a

strong finish and gallop-out.

"I was very happy with the way he went," Parbhoo said. "I was more concerned

with how he finished than the overall time, and the last two furlongs is all I

was really interested in. I got his half in 50 and two, and the five-eighths in

1:02 and change, so he basically came home in 12, which is what I wanted.

"And if you saw the work, I'm not sure you would have known it was a work,

because he was really galloping most of the way."

With Trinniberg's first post-Dubai workout officially logged, Parbhoo has now

turned his attention to mapping out a series of races that will get the son of

Teuflesberg prepared and at his peak for a Breeders' Cup Sprint title defense at

Santa Anita in November.

"I've got two races I'm looking at between now and July," Parbhoo said. “The

first is the Churchill Downs on Derby Day, and the second is the Smile Sprint

the first weekend in July. I wish the Churchill race wasn't coming up so quick,

because I'd like another week or two, but at the same time I don't want to sit

that race out and wait for the Smile."

With entries for the Churchill Downs to be taken in just two weeks on May 1,

Parbhoo will have little time to mull over a decision on whether to run his

champion colt.

"The plan is to breeze him again next week, either Wednesday or Thursday

depending on the weather," Parbhoo said. "And if everything goes according to

plan, we'll go to Kentucky."
