Windshear aiming for St Leger
Windshear, trained by Richard Hannon Jr., is under consideration for the
Group 1, £650,000 St Leger at Doncaster following his unlucky defeat at
Glorious Goodwood last week.
The three-year-old son of Hurricane Run encountered trouble in running when a
fast-finishing second to Snow Sky in the Gordon Stakes on July 30, beaten a
neck.
The 12-furlong contest has been a good pointer to the world's oldest classic
in recent years, with Encke (2012), Arctic Cosmos (2010), Conduit (2008) and
Sixties Icon (2006) using it as stepping stone to Doncaster glory.
Prior to his best effort at Goodwood, the progressive Windshear finished
second to Hartnell in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket on July 10 and filled the
same position behind Elite Army in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot in
June.
"Windshear has come out of Goodwood fine and there are no problems," Hannon
said. "He ran well in the Gordon. Maybe he was a little bit unlucky but it was
still a good run and we will have a look at the St Leger now.
"I'm not sure yet if he will have another run between now and then. We will
have to see."
Windshear is a 14-1 chance with Ladbrokes, the sponsor for the St Leger,
which takes place on September 13, the fourth and final day of the St Leger
Festival.
Hannon is in his first season as trainer after assisting his father and wants
to gain the Wiltshire stable's first St Leger victory. He is currently second in
the British trainers' championship.
A total of 33 entries were made for the extended 14-furlong classic and the
first scratchings deadline is on August 26.
The next major trial for the St Leger is the Great Voltigeur Stakes over 12
furlongs at York on August 20.
