WINNING WITH WORKOUTS

JANUARY 6

In this regular weekly feature, Handicapper's Report will present examples of

how to use workouts in your handicapping using actual results with horses

featured in our reports. To access the HR reports and see highlights of

Today's Topic: Young horses often improve dramatically overnight: Workouts

can be your signal.

Young, lightly-raced horses can improve when their trainer finds the “secret"

to unlocking their natural potential. RESPLENDENCY (Tale of the Cat) was coming off a short layoff

with the blinkers being put back on again by Bob Baffert. The three-year-old was

entered against older stakes fillies in the downgraded Monrovia H. in race 7 on

December 31 at Santa Anita. She owned only a first allowance condition win and

appeared over her head.

However, she came into the race with three Grade A workouts from our clocker, including her last one in which he commented: “This one continues to train super

in the morning…Can't say enough about how well this one is training. Just

waiting for her to show up in the entries. Super work."

She outran some nice fillies as a Fit and Ready lister and paid $12.60 to

win.
