Woodbine kicks off Mile weekend with juvenile stakes

Last updated: 9/15/10 7:52 PM

A pair of one-mile turf events for juveniles will highlight Saturday's

Woodbine program, with the main feature of the weekend being the C$1 million

Woodbine Mile (Can-G1) on Sunday. The two-year-olds will get their turn in the

spotlight first, though, as nine fillies and eight colts face off in their

respective races.

The connections of Pluck (red hat) hope for better luck in the Summer S.

The boys will go first in the C$250,000

Summer

S. (Can-G3), scheduled as the 4TH race on Saturday's card. PLUCK (More Than

Ready) is the only colt in the field with prior stakes experience, that coming

when he missed by a neck in the August 14 Continental Mile S. at Monmouth Park.

The Todd Pletcher trainee raced in between horses in midpack before closing

ground on the leaders exiting the backstretch. The dark bay colt circled the

field rounding the turn and was only a neck shy of the win as Rustler Hustler

(Ecton Park) slipped through on the rail to score. Pluck actually dead-heated

for second, but drifted toward the inside in the final yards, forcing Powhatan

County (Fusaichi Pegasus) to take up sharply, and was subsequently disqualified

and placed fourth. Powhatan County endorsed Pluck's form by coming back to run

second in the With Anticipation S. (G3) at Saratoga. Pluck will get Garrett

Gomez in the irons for the first time on Saturday.

Despite his performance in the Continental Mile, Pluck may not go off favored

in the Summer. That could fall to FORUM (Roman Ruler), who just missed by a nose

in his turf debut two back before breaking his maiden by a half-length on the

grass. Both of those starts came at Saratoga, and the George Weaver charge

earned field-topping BRIS numbers for the efforts. He'll be making his stakes

bow in this spot under the guidance of Javier Castellano.

Also entered in the Summer are SILVERLEO (Badge of Silver) and STORMY RUSH

(Stormy Atlantic), as well as RONIN DAX (Tapit). The former pair bring an edge

in the form of course experience into the mile test while Ronin Dax captured his

career bow on Del Mar's green by 1 1/4 lengths last out.

The fillies will line up in the gate four races later in the C$200,000

Natalma

S. (Can-G3). ROXY GAP (Indian Charlie) will be looking to keep her

undefeated mark perfect in this, her fourth career start, and gets local talent

Patrick Husbands in the irons. The Mark Casse-trained bay broke her maiden on

Woodbine's Polytrack, then added the Shady Well S. to her resume next out. She

tried turf for the first time while facing allowance rivals on August 21 and

schooled her five rivals, leading all the way home to score by 4 3/4 lengths.

In second that day was SHEBA'S SECRET (Kingmambo), who will be looking to

turn the tables on her opponent Saturday. The Roger Attfield pupil is still

seeking her first win, but showed improvement while going from a third-place

finish in a seven-furlong maiden to second in the mile allowance.

Pletcher will also send out a runner in the Natalma in the form of MORE THAN

REAL (More Than Ready). The chestnut lass took her career bow for trainer Chad

Brown, but will be competing in Pletcher's name here. Gomez will stay in the

saddle on the filly as she cuts back to a mile following her 8 1/2-furlong

maiden victory at Saratoga.
