Woodbine to install Polytrack
Woodbine announced Tuesday that it will install a Polytrack surface on its
one-mile main track. Construction is scheduled to begin in early July.
"We have a responsibility to help ensure the safety of our sport's athletes
-- both human and equine -- and we're convinced that Polytrack is a safer racing
surface," said David Willmot, CEO and chairman of Woodbine Entertainment Group.
"We also believe our customers will welcome the opportunity to wager on racing
that is safe, consistent and competitive."
Polytrack has a top layer that works in tandem with a unique vertical
drainage system. The top layer is comprised of silica sand, fibers and recycled
materials. It is designed to provide a soft cushion for the horse and rider. The
material has a wax coating that allows water to drain into the sub layers, which
helps prevent freezing and inconsistency.
Woodbine will be the second racetrack in North America to install Polytrack as its
main racing surface. Last August, Turfway Park installed Polytrack and is
reporting significant improvements in horse and rider safety as well as fewer
canceled racing days.
In September 2004, Keeneland installed Polytrack on its five-eights of a mile
training track, making it the first facility in North America to offer the
synthetic surface. Last year, Keeneland announced plans to install Polytrack as
its main racing surface in time for the 2006 fall meeting, pending approval from
its board in April.
"We are confident that Woodbine, its horsemen and its customers will be
thrilled with Polytrack," said Martin Collins, who pioneered the synthetic surface more than 20 years ago.
