Two colts trained by Nick Zito -- BIRDSTONE (Grindstone) and SUN KING (Charismatic) -- breezed over a muddy Oklahoma training track at Saratoga on Friday.
Birdstone breezed six furlongs in 1:16 4/5 in preparation for Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Lone Star Park. The bay colt won the August 28 Travers S. (G1) in his last start off an 84-day layoff after denying Smarty Jones the Triple Crown in the June 5 Belmont S. (G1). Birdstone could contend for both three-year-old and Horse of the Year honors with a victory in the 1 1/4-mile Classic.
Sun King breezed seven furlongs in 1:29 4/5 in advance of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). The dark bay colt broke his maiden impressively at Belmont Park in his second start, then dueled for the early lead before finishing gamely for third, beaten 1 3/4 lengths, in the 1 1/16-mile Champagne S. (G1) on October 9. The Juvenile at Lone Star will be his first start around two turns.
