Datrick scores in Kentucky Breeders' Cup

Datrick won Thursday's Kentucky Breeders' Cup S. (Reed Palmer/Churchill Downs)
Heiligbrodt Racing Stable's homebred DATRICK (Favorite Trick) pressed the pacesetting Sentry (Silver Deputy) during the early running of Thursday's $184,250 Kentucky Breeders' Cup S. (G3) before moving up in the stretch under a hard ride from jockey Shaun Bridgmohan to take the five-furlong test by 1 1/4 lengths. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the dark bay colt stopped the clock in :58 1/5 on the fast Churchill Downs track as the 5-2 second choice and paid $7.40, $4.40 and $3.60.

Pro Pink (Touch Gold) managed to get up for second by 1 3/4 lengths, returning $15 and $7.40 at 23-1 while ending the $156 exacta. Sentry set the splits of :22 1/5 and :45 3/5 after 2-1 favorite Sequoia King (Forestry) tried to wheel coming out of the gate and was relegated to last in the early going. Show gave back $4.60 at 7-1. The trifecta was worth $1,004 and the 4-6-3-11 superfecta yielded $14,480.60.

Nereus (Sea of Secrets) followed the top three under the line and next came Beautiful Venue (Came Home), Sequoia King, Erin's Kristina (Precise End), Fortunate Envoy (French Envoy), Hot Flame (Flame Thrower), Teuflesberg (Johannesburg), Ringside Partner (Pure Prize) and Mistycal Light (Festival of Light).

Datrick broke his maiden in his debut prior to this one, taking the 4 1/2-furlong Keeneland test by 7 1/2 lengths, and has now earned $136,202. Bred in Texas, the juvenile colt is out of Daum (French Deputy), who also has an unnamed 2006 colt by Abajo.
