Stepping up to face older horses for the first time in Saturday’s Coolmore Turf Mile (G1), Annapolis stamped his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) over the same Keeneland course.

Virginia Joy stole a ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) by toppling 1-5 favorite War Like Goddess in Saturday’s Flower Bowl (G2), and Annapolis could be on a path to the Mile (G1) after his odds-on conquest of the Saranac (G3).

A tough-trip runner-up in the July 9 Belmont Derby (G1), Godolphin’s Nations Pride enjoyed a smoother passage to prevail in Saturday’s $1 million Saratoga Derby (G1).

Friday night’s Penn Mile (G2) produced a gigantic upset as the 83.30-1 Wow Whata Summer repelled 1-2 favorite Annapolis. The companion Penn Oaks proved more formful, courtesy of 2-5 favorite Haughty at Penn National.

Sunday’s Waya S. (G3) at Belmont Park underwent several changes between 2020 and 2021, but one thing stayed consistent: My Sister Nat as the winner.

Both a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and a points race toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1), the $400,000 Frizette (G1) anchors a trio of graded stakes at Belmont Park on Sunday.

Three horses are memorialized with markers at Montpelier. The most famous of these is Battleship, who in 1938 provided Mrs. Scott with a victory in the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree. The 1969 Hall of Fame inductee remains the only horse to win both that race and its American equivalent, and is the most recent non-gelded male to land the prize. Battleship later sired champion steeplechasers War Battle and Shipboard.
