A couple of Grade 1 turf stakes took place at Saratoga on Sunday after being delayed due to rain. Even with the precautions, one took place during a rain shower and both were held over damp grass labeled good.

Making just his third career start in Saturday’s Saratoga Derby (G1), undefeated Program Trading handled the class hike, and displayed terrific battling qualities, to prevail in his stakes debut.

Whitney Day includes a trio of turf stakes, led by the $600,000 Saratoga Derby (G1) that offers a match-up between Belmont Derby (G1) winner Far Bridge and Belmont Oaks (G1) heroine Aspen Grove.

A tough-trip runner-up in the July 9 Belmont Derby (G1), Godolphin’s Nations Pride enjoyed a smoother passage to prevail in Saturday’s $1 million Saratoga Derby (G1).

Irish invader State of Rest sprang a 21-1 surprise in Saturday’s $1 million Saratoga Derby (G1), while the other two turf stakes on Whitney Day went to favorites War Like Goddess and Flavius.
