Barbaro scheduled for cast change

Last updated: 8/8/06 5:54 PM

Kentucky Derby (G1) winner BARBARO (Dynaformer) was scheduled to have the

cast on his right hind leg changed on Tuesday, according to Dr. Dean Richardson,

chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

"Changing the cast gives us the opportunity to take new radiographs and

evaluate the progress of the fracture healing and joint fusions," Richardson

said.

Barbaro shattered his right hind leg during the early stages of the May 20

Preakness S. (G1). Shortly after undergoing a second surgery four weeks ago on his injured

right hind limb, Barbaro developed a severe, life-threatening case of laminitis in his

left hind foot. To treat the condition, Richardson removed about 80 percent of the hoof wall.

The

bandage on Barbaro's left hind foot is changed daily.

"His left hind hoof continues to show signs of re-growth and looks healthy,"

Richardson said.

Barbaro continues to recuperate in the Intensive Care Unit of the George D.

Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New

Bolton Center in Kennett Square.
