Breeders' Cup will host Tweeters' Cup at Santa Anita
The Breeders' Cup announced Tuesday that it will host the "Tweeters' Cup"
during Friday's championship program at the 2009 Breeders' Cup World
Championships at Santa Anita Park on November 6. While other sports properties
have utilized Twitter, the "Tweeters' Cup" will mark the first time a Tweet-Up
will be held onsite during a championship event. Lalawag.com, an online magazine
that covers the tech culture, events and gossip news in Los Angeles, will serve
as a media partner for the Tweet-Up.
The "Tweeters' Cup" will be held exclusively at Seabiscuit Court at Santa
Anita Park and will follow similar formats of other Tweet-Ups. The event will be
a social gathering place for horseracing fans and Los Angeles-based people who
are active on Twitter, but will also incorporate horseracing content throughout
the day. Tweeters can register at
http://2009breederscup.eventbrite.com. The program will include:
* Betting the Breeders' Cup Handicapping session featuring Joe Drape of the
New York Times, Ed DeRosa of the Thoroughbred Times and Tom Quigley of
Horseplayer Magazine
* Q&A with prominent current and retired jockeys
* Appearances by ESPN personalities and jockeys from Animal Planet's
critically acclaimed reality show "Jockeys" and more
Registered participants will also have a designated seating area on the
frontside of the track to watch all of the Breeders' Cup Championship Friday
races and one Tweeter will win a trip for two to the 2010 Breeders' Cup World
Championships at Churchill Downs.
"Social media and Twitter have allowed the Breeders' Cup to establish a
personal connection and a dialogue with horseracing fans all over the world. The
'Tweeters' Cup' is a celebration of that connection and something we felt was a
natural element to include at the Breeders' Cup," said Peter Rotondo, Vice
President of Media & Entertainment for the Breeders' Cup.
The Championship Friday program will consist of six Breeders' Cup races,
beginning with the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon, and will be followed by five
consecutive Breeders' Cup races for females, culminating with the $2 million
Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (G1). The Marathon will begin the all Breeders'
Cup Pick 6.
The Breeders' Cup, Thoroughbred racing's global championship event,
consisting of 14 races and purses totaling $25.5 million, will held at the Oak
Tree meeting at Santa Anita for the second consecutive year. The Breeders' Cup
will also be televised live by ABC/ESPN with nine hours of live domestic
coverage and in 130 foreign countries.
