Iffraaj colt sets new record for Tattersalls Book 3 opener

The opening session of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale saw a

new record price for the sale when a colt by leading first season sire winner

Iffraaj topped proceedings late in the evening at 82,000 guineas during a

session that saw 95 lots sell for 930,400 guineas, at an average of 9,794

guineas and a median of 5,500 guineas.

It was late in evening when the colt out of multiple Group 3-placed listed

winner Topkamp (Pennekamp), consigned from Peter Stanley's New England Stud,

entered the ring as Lot No. 1864. A plethora of bids came flying from a variety

of Breeze Up consignors, including David O'Callaghan, Thomond O'Mara and Willie

Browne as well as agent Bobby O'Ryan and trainer Paul Cole. However, Tweenhills

Stud's David Redvers made a late bid of 82,000 guineas and secured the colt.

Redvers indicated that he had bought the colt to breeze and will be shipping

him out to Ireland to be based with Willie Browne at Mocklershill.

"He is by the best current sire, other than Dubawi," Redvers explained, "and

is out of a stakes-winning mare who has produced three winners. I think if he

had gone through earlier in the week he would have made 150,000 guineas. He is a

stunning horse and I have bought him to breeze -- he will go to Willie Browne. I

think he could be a valuable horse come next year."

"We have had a great week and we are very pleased," said Stanley of New

England Stud. "It is certainly worth waiting for such a good sale as this."

The second highest priced lot for the session, a colt by Refuse to Bend (Ire)

out of Lilakiya (Dr Fong), was the subject of a significant catalog update after

his half-brother Karam Albaari (King's Best) ran a close-up fourth to Saamidd

(Street Cry [Ire]) in the Champagne S. (Eng-G2) at Doncaster. Trainer John

Jenkins, who trains Karam Albaari from his base in Royston, led the bidding on

Lot 1811 and, despite strong opposition from Tim Easterby, Bobby O'Ryan and

Willie Brown, he signed for the colt at 60,000 guineas.

"I did come specially for this horse," Jenkins admitted. "I have an owner for

him and this horse is a good-looking type."

The sale of the colt, whose dam is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner

and highweight Linngari (Indian Ridge), represented a great result for his

owner, who had purchased him for 14,000 guineas at the 2009 Tattersalls December

Foal Sale through agent John Walsh.

Following the sale, consignor David Brown from Furnace Mill Stud said, "Not

everyone was aware of the update to this page, but it made a big difference! He

has always been a straightforward horse and really showed himself off up here. I

am delighted for his owner."

Earlier in the evening, a Kyllachy filly out of Descriptive (Desert King) was

knocked down to Dublin-based agent Peter Doyle, standing alongside trainer

Richard Hannon, for 40,000 guineas after he saw off fellow Irish-agent Bobby

O'Ryan. The filly, who was consigned from Barnane Stud as Lot 1768, is a

half-sister to 2009 Norwegian Two Thousand Guineas winner Saddle the Storm

(Xaar), who Doyle purchased in this ring three years ago.
