La Canada field could lose star attractions
Sunday's $200,000 La Canada S. (G2) at Santa Anita could lose its two main
stars before the gates even open. Both TOUGH TIZ'S SIS (Tiznow) and DAWN AFTER
DAWN (Successful Appeal) are cross-entered in Saturday's Santa Maria H. (G1), which
could leave the La Canada with a depleted field of four if their trainers choose
to run a day early.
Tough Tiz's Sis is looking for her first win since taking the Lady's Secret
S. (G1) at Oak Tree in early October. Since then, the bay four-year-old has
recorded an unplaced finish in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) and close seconds in both the Bayakoa
H. (G2) and El Encino S. (G2). She's scheduled to get Victor Espinoza
aboard while toting the top weight of 123 pounds.
Dawn After Dawn will be making her third start for John Sadler in whichever
race she goes in. Fourth in last year's Kentucky Oaks (G1), the bay lass filled
that same spot when making her four-year-old bow in the El Encino last out and
will only have to carry 116 pounds, including jockey Garrett Gomez, in the La
Canada.
DOWN (Mr. Greeley) made her second career start a third in the Hollywood
Starlet S. (G1) on the Cushion Track before finally breaking through with a
first win on the turf at Belmont. She tried the main track in the Test S. (G1),
finishing next-to-last, and trainer Bobby Frankel immediately moved her back to
the grass and synthetic surfaces. The gray miss won an allowance most recently
on Santa Anita's Cushion Track and will try to make it two in a row with this
one.
Dawn After Dawn drew the rail post, and to her outside will be CARESSIVE (A.P.
Indy), Rafael Bejarano, 116; Tough Tiz's Sis; SAY YOU WILL (A.P. Indy), David
Flores, 116; Down, Alex Solis, 116; and BAHIA ROSE (Arg) (American Chance), Omar
Berrio, 116.
Also on Sunday's card, an overflow field of 13 will line up in the $75,000
Wishing Well II H. going about 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course.
Grade 2 winner FOXYSOX (GB) (Foxhound) is the top draw, most recently running
third in the Paseana H. on the Cushion Track in her seasonal debut. The Carla
Gaines-trained chestnut owns three wins from four starts over Santa Anita's
turf, and will try to continue that mark with Espinoza returning to the saddle.
