Gimme a Nother up in time in Beverly D; Supercharger takes Secretariat

South African champion Gimme a Nother overcame an unfavorable pace scenario to capture Saturday’s $500,000 Beverly D. (G2), earning her most lucrative North American victory on Arlington Million Day at Colonial Downs.

Trained by Graham Motion and confidently handled by John Velazquez, the 8-5 favorite hunted down a loose-on-the-lead Achieve. Somethinabouther was also in the fray to produce a pulsating three-way finish in the Million’s sister race. 

The graded action at the stakes-laden festival kicked off with the $500,000 Secretariat (G2), where Supercharger became the latest headliner for trainer Cherie DeVaux’s three-year-old arsenal. Making his stakes debut in the 1 1/16-mile affair, the C R K Stable runner rallied to edge Infiltrate and 11-10 favorite Alpyland.

Unbeaten in South Africa, Gimme a Nother was knocking on the door in North America until her breakthrough in last September’s John C. Mabee (G2) at Del Mar. The Newstead Stables runner promised to keep her momentum going in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), only to be ruled out by an ill-timed setback. 

Gimme a Nother is once more on the Breeders’ Cup trail this season, arguably better than ever. She rolled by 3 1/2 lengths in her comeback, the June 13 Eatontown (G3) at Monmouth Park, and made it three graded stakes in succession here.

But Achieve, a 9-1 shot in her stakes debut, nearly stole the 1 3/16-mile prize. One likely pace rival, Storm Miami, scratched in favor of Sunday’s rescheduled Glens Falls (G2) at Saratoga (as did fellow cross-entry Venencia). The other potential pacesetter, 2.60-1 second choice Stellify, didn’t break sharply in her belated reappearance, and never got close to the front. 

That left Achieve in the enviable position of controlling speed. The daughter of Triple Crown champion Justify got away with fractions of :24.77, :49.34, and 1:13.41 on the firm outer course. Her nearest pursuer, Crevalle d’Oro, did not apply any pressure before retreating. Somethinabouther, who had been stalking in third, took over the chasing spot as they swung into the lane. 

Gimme a Nother, fourth for most of the way, was given her cue to advance, and the champion responded. Although Achieve still had something left up her sleeve, and Somethinabouther got the jump on Gimme a Nother, they could not hold off her relentless closing kick.

Along in time to collar Achieve, with Somethinabouther another neck back in third, Gimme a Nother clocked 1:54.28.

Stellify stayed on well to finish a clear fourth, suggesting that she can move forward with a more characteristic trip next time. Fast Market, Haute Diva, Way to Be Marie, Pin Up Betty, and Crevalle d’Oro concluded the order under the wire. Daisy Flyer was withdrawn along with the Glens Falls-bound Venencia and Storm Miami. 

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Gimme a Nother sports a mark of 14-10-3-0 with $811,373 in earnings. A perfect 7-for-7 in South Africa, she ranked as her homeland’s champion three-year-old filly with marquee scores in the 2024 S.A. Fillies’ Classic (G1) and Empress Club (G1). The bay collected runner-up placings in the 2025 Hillsborough (G2), Modesty (G3), and Canadian (G2), with her only blip coming on yielding ground in last summer’s New York (G1) at the Spa.

Gimme a Nother’s name reflects her parents, outstanding sire Gimmethegreenlight and champion Nother Russia. By Tiger Ridge, Nother Russia is an allusion to her dam, champion Mother Russia. Thus Gimme a Nother is a third-generation champion in her female line. 

Secretariat (G2)

The highlight of DeVaux’s annus mirabilis is Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont (G1) hero Golden Tempo, but she has budding sophomore stars in other specialties. Sprinter Englishman has flashed freakish talent, and she already had a prominent turf sophomore in Remember Mamba, a fellow C R K colorbearer like Supercharger.

Unlike Remember Mamba, Supercharger has been a work in progress. The Constitution colt began to turn the corner with back-to-back maiden and allowance scores at Churchill Downs. The bay continued his ascent here as the 3.20-1 second choice, despite his tendency to have a problematic start.

Taking a bobble out of the gate with Manny Franco, Supercharger recovered and settled comfortably off the pace. Up front, Conducted was eager to carve out splits of :23.40, :47.68, and 1:11.06. 

Alpyland appeared to be well placed in a stalking position. As the favorite pounced entering the stretch, he hinted that a third straight stakes victory was within his grasp.

But inside the final sixteenth, Supercharger and Infiltrate were both kicking into top gear. Supercharger found a tad more than Infiltrate, who was making his turf and stakes debut off an eight-month layoff, to score by a half-length.

Infiltrate ran a mighty race in second, a neck up on Alpyland. Fuzzbuster held fourth by a half-length from the mildly-closing Turf Star. Next came Conducted, Street Beast, and the ever-trailing longshot Vino Solo. Redland Rebels was scratched.

Supercharger, who covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.24, returned $8.40. His resume now reads 6-3-1-0, $467,709.

Bred by Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally and his wife, Deborah, Supercharger was purchased for $225,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. He is the first foal from the Candy Ride mare She’s Our Charm, who is a Grade 3-placed full sister to the 2021 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner, Rock Your World.
