Burnham Square copes with cutback in Arlington Million

Odds-on favorite Burnham Square toughed out a victory despite a suboptimal set-up in Saturday’s 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million (G1) at Colonial Downs. By finding a way to win regardless, the Ian Wilkes trainee reiterated his status as the leading U.S. contender for the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), back up in his 1 1/2-mile wheelhouse. 

With regular pilot Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard, Burnham Square was reserved about four lengths off the steady pace. He would be the only closer to get involved, repaying his rider’s faith in his acceleration. 

As front-running Layabout posted splits of :24.18, :48.85, and 1:13.70 on the firm outer turf, Gran Oriente kept tabs in second. Dresden Row also raced within striking range in third, until the complexion changed on the far turn. 

At that point, Gran Oriente launched his challenge, with Integration also commencing a short-lived move, and Burnham Square revving up wider out. Dresden Row found himself a couple of spots further behind before he could angle into the clear.

Gran Oriente headed Layabout at the mile mark in 1:37.69. As a Group 1 winner at the metric equivalent of this distance in his native Chile, Gran Oriente figured to put away the 67-1 pacesetter. But Layabout hung tough on the inside and regained a slim lead in midstretch. 

Both were about to be tackled by Burnham Square, who was bearing down. Yet the 4-5 favorite was all out to pass the battling leaders, and when Burnham Square finally began to get the upper hand, Dresden Row came surging in the final yards.

At the wire, Burnham Square maintained a half-length margin over Gran Oriente, who just saved second by a nose from Dresden Row. Layabout reported home another neck adrift in fourth.

There was a three-length gap back to defending champion Fort Washington, who rallied from last to snatch fifth from Test Score. Integration faded from contention, clipped heels, and ended up being eased. According to the chart, he walked off the course. Mercante was scratched in favor of Sunday’s Green River Island S. at Ellis Park.

Burnham Square, a Whitham Thoroughbreds homebred, clocked 2:00.80 and boosted his bankroll to $2,884,244 from a 15-7-4-1 line. The Liam’s Map gelding leapt to the top of the long-distance turf division with romps in the April 18 Elkhorn (G2) at Keeneland and the May 16 Louisville (G3) at Churchill Downs. 

Last time beneath the Twin Spires, the slight cutback to 1 3/8 miles in the Chorleywood S. nearly foiled him with its lack of pace. Burnham Square ended up leading early, and he had to pull out all the stops to scrape home. 

Shortening up to 1 1/4 miles for the Arlington Million might not have posed as serious a challenge if he’d had a robust pace. After all, Burnham Square had the gears to excel on dirt during the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby, winning the Holy Bull (G3) and Blue Grass (G1) before a troubled sixth in the Run for the Roses. He was also runner-up in last summer’s Matt Winn (G3) and the near-misser in the Nashville Derby (G3) in his turf debut at Kentucky Downs.

The tempo in the Million wasn’t risible as it had been in the Chorleywood, but it was moderate enough for the shorter trip. The combination of those factors increased his degree of difficulty, and Burnham Square had to rely on his superior class to carry the day.

Now a Grade 1 winner on both turf and dirt, Burnham Square is adding to his family legacy. His dam, the Scat Daddy mare Linda, and granddam, Beautiful Noise, were both Grade 2 winners on the lawn. 

Plans call for Burnham Square to stretch back out to 1 1/2 miles for the Sept. 5 Kentucky Turf Cup (G2) at Kentucky Downs, a “Win and You’re In” for the Turf at Keeneland.
