Reef Runner got up in the deep stretch to win Saturday’s $500,000 Jaipur (G1) at Saratoga, overhauling defending champion Ag Bullet and pacesetter John the Beer Man to prevail by a half-length.

A homebred for Alex and JoAnn Lieblong, Reef Runner recorded his fifth stakes and first Grade 1 win, and the six-year-old gelding booked his 2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) ticket taking the “Win & You’re In” race.

Irad Ortiz Jr. was up for David Fawkes, and Reef Runner completed 5 1/2 grassy furlongs in a blazing 1:00.02, missing the course record by .22 seconds. The Jaipur was held for the third and final year at Saratoga, before returning to renovated Belmont Park next year.

“That was great,” Ortiz said. “When he broke sharp, I was really happy with that. He put me in a really good position. He always kicks at the end. He did it on his own. I never hit him. I was full of horse. I just showed the stick at him and he just did the rest. He’s a really nice horse, very consistent and straightforward. Five-and-a-half (furlongs) sometimes doesn’t always go his way, but the way he’s been doing lately, he’s amazing. He’s a strong sprinter.”

Winner of February’s Turf Sprint (G2) on the Saudi Cup undercard two starts back, Reef Runner was exiting a fourth in the Al Quoz Sprint (G1) on the Dubai World Cup undercard in early April. The Florida-bred started to discover his best career form in the second half of last season, finishing first in the Eddie D (G2) and Green Flash (G3) (disqualified and placed second in latter) before concluding 2025 with a rallying fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and a win in December’s Janus S. at Gulfstream Park.

Reef Runner confirmed himself as a leading American turf sprinter and left the starting gate as the 5.24-1 third choice in the 10-horse Jaipur. He’s now earned more than $2 million from a 24-8-5-5 record.

“I was happy with him coming in,” Fawkes said. “He was a little nervous in the paddock which I figured might have been first time back in the (United) States jitters, but I wasn’t too worried. Irad said that when he broke, the race was over. He was on the bridle and ready to roll.

“We’re going to point to the Breeders’ Cup and hope for good weather, like this.”

Ag Bullet, runner-up in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, was off as the 4-1 second choice in her 2026 comebacker and tracked John the Beer Man in second through opening splits in :21.19 and :43.13, advancing to take a short lead in the stretch before grudgingly giving way to the winner late. She held second by a neck over John the Beer Man, who brought a three-race win streak into his stakes debut and never quit fighting to the wire.

It was about another length back to Twenty Six Black in fourth. My Boy Prince, the 3-1 favorite, wound up fifth and next came Litigation, Bold Journey, Governor Sam, Works for Me, and Clock Tower.

Reef Runner is a son of The Big Beast and is the second stakes winner out of the Blame mare Paradise Bay, a half-sister to multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Paradise Woods.
