Dreadnaught has found flat racing to his liking (Skip Smith)

H. (G2) on Calder's Grand Slam II program, but

managed to stick his neck in front of Demeteor (Dehere) at the wire to earn his

second straight graded win. Trained by Tom Voss, the four-year-old gelding was

sent off the 3-1 favorite and paid out $8.20, $4.60 and $3.80 for completing 1

1/2 miles on the firm turf in 2:26 3/5.

Certifiably Crazy (Fit to Fight) set the pace through fractions of :24, :49

1/5, 1:13 4/5 and 1:39 1/5, but couldn't hold on as the rest of the field

began to close in. All the while, Dreadnaught and jockey Jean-Luc Samyn were

patiently waiting for their chance while racing three and four wide. They came

out four wide entering the stretch and took a short lead at the eighth pole.

The eventual winner had to dig down to hold off Demeteor, who took a slight lead

at the stretch call of 2:03, before eventually succumbing to Dreadnaught in the

end.

As the 12-1 eighth choice in the 12-horse field, Demeteor returned $13.40 and

$8.40 while ending the $140.80 exacta. Scooter Roach (Mi Cielo) was sent off at

35-1 and gave back $11.40 for coming in a half-length farther back in third and

finishing the nice $2,494.80 trifecta. Colonial Bay (Pleasant Colony) rounded

out the top four at another double-digit price and the 4-8-3-1 superfecta gave

back $7,903.40. Puppeteer (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]), Irish Colonial (Colonial

Affair), Certifiably Crazy, Macaw (Ire) (Bluebird), In Hand (Belong to Me), Dr.

Brendler (Distant View), Latino (Per) (Laubali) and Rays a Ruler (Groomstick)

completed the order of finish.

Dreadnaught has found a home for himself on the flat after spending the early

part of his career in steeplechasing. He's steadily improved with each start,

finishing a close second in the John Henry S. two back before taking the Red

Smith H. (G2) prior to this one by a nose. He now owns a 15-5-4-0 career line

and $305,523 in lifetime earnings.
