For the second straight day at Del Mar, jockey Flavien Prat made a well-timed move aboard a Phil D’Amato trainee to win a Grade 2 turf event.

Speed held sway in the graded turf routes at Santa Anita on Saturday, as Masteroffoxhounds and Beyond Brilliant, respectively, dictated terms in the John Henry Turf Championship (G2) and City of Hope Mile (G2).

Chilean import Master Piece was overlooked as the also-eligible drawing into Sunday’s Eddie Read (G2) at Del Mar. But the 16-1 shot soon commanded attention when exploding from off the pace to a daylight victory.

American (G3) hero Hong Kong Harry brings a perfect 3-for-3 stateside record into Sunday’s Eddie Read (G2) at Del Mar. One of a quartet representing Phil D’Amato, the stalker will try to run down course-and-distance Grade 1 winner Beyond Brilliant.

Trainer Phil D’Amato swept both graded turf stakes on Big ‘Cap Day at Santa Anita, in contrasting styles. Count Again got up on the wire in the $503,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1), while Leggs Galore wired the $202,500 Buena Vista (G2).

Upsets were the theme of the afternoon in a trio of off-the-turf graded stakes on opening day at Santa Anita.

Favorites were overturned in all three stakes at Del Mar Saturday, with the biggest upset furnished by the 10.90-1 Beyond Brilliant in the $404,500 Hollywood Derby (G1).

LNJ Foxwoods’ Subconscious had been lurking in the background of the sophomore turf division, but Halloween opened the door for his emergence in the Twilight Derby.
