The Fountain of Youth (G2) is the likeliest of the quartet to have a major impact on the trail, while the utility of the San Felipe (G2) arguably depends on how the race plays out. The Gotham (G3) has a few smart types, but more of the one-turn variety.

On New Year’s Day at Santa Anita, Newgrange, and John Velazquez, did an excellent job of marking time in the Sham (G3) for Kentucky Derby (G1) hopefuls.

Odds-on favorites got the job done in both of Sunday’s stakes on closing day at Belmont Park, the Nashua (G3) for juveniles and the Zagora S. for turf distaffers.

Odds-on favorite Corniche stamped his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) ticket in Friday’s American Pharoah S. (G1) at Santa Anita, and fellow unbeaten One Timer captured the Speakeasy S., a “Win and You’re In” for the Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2).

The opening day of Santa Anita's fall meet on Friday will feature three Breeders' Cup Challenge preps for two-year-olds, as well as a potentially key prep for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1).
