The opening day of Santa Anita's fall meet on Friday will feature three Breeders' Cup Challenge preps for two-year-olds, as well as a potentially key prep for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

East Coast shippers swept both graded stakes at Del Mar Saturday, Pappacap in the Best Pal S. (G2) and Princess Grace in the Yellow Ribbon H. (G2).

The ninth furlong of Monday’s $301,000 Gamely S. (G1) turned out to be a bridge too far for 9-10 favorite Charmaine’s Mia, but it was right in the target zone for Maxim Rate.

On Saturday afternoon, racing fans had an opportunity to see both the present and the future of California’s filly and mare turf division in action.

Three stakes will be offered on Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby undercard, including a major qualifier for the Kentucky Oaks (G1).
