Newgrange caught 7-5 favorite Hopper in deep stretch and edged away to a one-length victory in Saturday’s $202,000 San Pasqual (G2) at Santa Anita.

When 7-10 favorite Defunded left the gate not just slowly in Sunday’s Native Diver (G3), but awkwardly with a sideways hop, backers might have felt that their wallets would be defunded.

The Native Diver (G3) at Del Mar could be billed as a clash of former stablemates: Defunded and Azul Coast, still with Bob Baffert, and barn alum Newgrange.

Santa Anita’s opening weekend bonanza continues with four stakes on the Sunday program - the Speakeasy (a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In”), Zenyatta (G2), Chillingworth (G3), and Tokyo City Cup (G3).

The field for Saturday’s $1 million Rebel (G2) gives a sense of déjà vu, with the top five from the Southwest (G3) reuniting over the same 1 1/16-mile circuit at Oaklawn Park. But the result might not be the same.
